Catarina Macario's USWNT World Cup availability uncertain after knee surgery

United States forward Catarina Macario will miss the rest of the 2026 NWSL season with the San Diego Wave due to a knee injury requiring surgery. This setback raises questions about her participation in upcoming Concacaf World Cup qualifiers scheduled for late November, shortly after the domestic league concludes, according to ESPN's reporting.

Macario's recovery timeline remains unspecified following the procedure. This is the second significant injury for the USWNT star this year; a heel injury had previously overshadowed her record-setting transfer to San Diego from Chelsea in March. Her NWSL debut for the Wave is now projected for 2027.

NWSL clubs make significant personnel changes amid playoff race

As the NWSL playoff race intensifies, several clubs have announced major roster and staffing decisions. The Orlando Pride, currently 11th, secured a substantial re-signing by extending Ballon d’Or nominee Barbra Banda. Banda committed to a multi-year deal through 2029, reportedly for a seven-figure sum. In a team statement, Banda expressed her commitment to the club, stating, “Orlando has become a special place for me, and I am excited to keep fighting for this club and win more trophies together.”

Conversely, 12th-place Houston Dash parted ways with technical director Twila Kilgore and head coach Fabrice Gautrat. These changes reflect the dynamic nature of the league as teams vie for playoff positions, as reported by Just Women's Sports.

USWNT depth in attack for upcoming World Cup qualifiers

Despite Macario’s absence, the USWNT possesses considerable depth in its attacking options for the 2027 World Cup qualification cycle. Sophia Wilson has consistently performed as a reliable number 9 for the national team, contributing 12 goals and two assists for the Portland Thorns.

Emma Hayes, the United States head coach, will also be evaluating Ashley Sanchez's integration into the attacking unit. Sanchez, an American number 10 and winger for the NC Courage, is nearing the NWSL record for goals in a single season. The USWNT aims to continue its strong form under Hayes, who has achieved 20 wins in 25 matches, marking the highest win rate of any senior national team.
