NWSL playoff race tightens as Angel City surges, Denver Summit falters
The NWSL playoff race remains highly competitive after a dramatic midweek slate, with several teams still vying for the final postseason spots.
Angel City has made a significant push, climbing within one point of eighth-place Seattle Reign, while Denver Summit's playoff hopes have diminished following another late collapse.
Angel City's historic win streak
Angel City secured a 3-1 victory over Seattle Reign, marking their first defeat in five matches. This win represented Angel City's first 10-win season in club history. Ally Sentnor converted a penalty kick, and Ary Borges along with Taylor Suarez sealed the victory.
The result places Angel City just one point behind Seattle Reign in the standings, further intensifying the competition for playoff positions.
Denver Summit's late-game struggles persist
Denver Summit, meanwhile, continued a troubling trend by squandering a two-goal lead for the second consecutive game. They allowed Bay FC to recover from a 2-0 deficit, resulting in a 2-2 draw. Claire Hutton initiated Bay FC's comeback with a second-half goal, followed by Taylor Huff's 90+6th-minute equalizer, which stands as Bay FC's latest goal in club history. Denver now finds themselves a concerning seven points adrift of the final playoff spot.
Youth international impact on NWSL teams
Seattle Reign's recent struggles have coincided with the absence of some of their promising young talent. Midfielder Ainsley McCammon, for instance, scored the equalizing goal for the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team in their 1-1 draw against Brazil in the U-20 Women’s World Cup. However, the U.S. team was ultimately eliminated in the Round of 16 after Emeri Adames had her penalty kick saved in a 5-4 shootout loss. These international commitments highlight the depth NWSL clubs rely on during key periods of the season, as midweek results influence the final playoff spots.
