USWNT U-20s exit World Cup, extending youth program's knockout struggles

The United States U-20 Women's National Team exited the U-20 Women’s World Cup in the Round of 16, falling to Brazil in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw through extra time. This elimination, detailed in The Guardian's reporting, prolongs a challenging period for American youth national team programs across both genders, marking the third instance since last October that a US youth side has failed to advance past a World Cup knockout match in a shootout.

The match, played in Katowice, Poland, saw Brazil’s Sofia open the scoring from a 59th-minute corner kick. Seattle Reign midfielder Ainsley McCammon, a notable club presence, equalized for the US from open play just four minutes later in the 63rd minute. Neither team could secure a decisive goal in the subsequent hour of play, leading to the penalty shootout.

Brazil goalkeeper Thaís Lima made a critical save on Emeri Adames’s initial attempt in the shootout, setting the stage for Brazil's 5-4 victory. This result means the US has not won the U-20 tournament since 2012, when the squad featured future senior team stalwarts like Crystal Dunn, Julie Ertz, and Sam Mewis.

Tournament Path and Context

The U-20 USWNT's path through the group stage was challenging. They opened with a loss to Italy and then secured a 2-2 draw against Japan. A dominant 9-0 win over New Zealand was ultimately sufficient to progress to the knockout stage as one of the best third-place teams.

In contrast, Brazil comfortably topped their group, achieving an aggregate score of 9-2 against Tanzania, Canada, and England. This quarter-final appearance is Brazil’s third consecutive in the U-20 Women’s World Cup, and their seventh overall in 12 appearances, with their best previous finishes being third place in 2006 and 2022.

Implications for US Youth Soccer Development

The recent struggles extend beyond the U-20 USWNT. Both the U-17 boys and U-17 girls national teams also exited their respective World Cups in the Round of 16 via shootouts. Furthermore, the U-20 men's team was eliminated in the quarter-finals of their World Cup in October 2025.

The timing of this year’s U-20 Women’s World Cup has drawn scrutiny, with former players and coaches raising concerns. The tournament, typically held every other year in August or September, fell later in the general timeframe this year and did not align with a FIFA international window. Consequently, many in-season club teams opted against releasing their players for the competition, potentially impacting squad selection and preparation for various national teams, as reported by the Guardian.
